Our IRLP node connects the GB3EE (Chesterfield) repeater to the IRLP network. If IRLP nodes had designated keepers, I guess I would have the privilege of "keeping" Node 5046.
In slight aberration from usual IRLP practice, node 5046 is running Gentoo Linux, which in my opinion, offers more flexibility than most other Linux distributions.
Several additions have been made to the IRLP installation including:
IRLP software running in a chroot() environment.
An 'organic' firewall, which adapts to allow IRLP traffic only from currently authenticated nodes.
Quality of Service (QoS) ruleset to improve IRLP network latency.
Additional remote administration features.
Many readers may now be asking the question "Why are you so obsessed with modifying something that already works?"
It's necessary to point out that I have no qualms with the excellent security features provided internally by the IRLP software. With some years' experience managing public servers, a 'belt & braces' approach to security has saved my bacon more than once. Although these modifications won't be for everyone, I'm happy to provide further information to other IRLP admins on request.
